James L. Amster, M.D., Medical Director
James L. (Jay) Amster, M.D. is a partner and medical director for Liberty Pacific Medical Imaging Long Beach, specializing in neuroadiology and musculoskeletal imaging. He is founder and president of Vista Radiology Medical Associates and is a board certified radiologist and a senior member of the American Society of Neuroradiology and the Western Neuroradiological Society.
Dr. Amster was president of the Honor Society of Fordham Preparatory School in New York City and magna cum laude in Chemistry at Princeton University. He is a graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine. After finishing a radiology residency as chief resident at the University of California at Irvine Medical Center, Dr. Amster completed a two-year neuroradiology fellowship at Cornell Medical Center, the New York Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
Before becoming a partner in LPMI, Dr. Amster practiced as a partner in Valley Advanced Imaging Medical Group (VAIMG) and as medical director of Valencia MRI, providing outpatient MRI and CT imaging for Insight Health Services facilities at the San Fernando Valley MRI (Valley Presbyterian Hospital campus), Encino Diagnostic Center, Encino Open MRI, Valley Open MRI, Valencia MRI, as well as interpretations for the MRI centers of the Southern California Orthopedic Institute in Van Nuys, Sierra Pacific Orthopedic Consultants in Fresno and Orthopedic Specialty Institute in Anaheim.
Previously, Dr. Amster was chief of neuroradiology at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center (LBMMC) and Memorial MRI Center for fourteen years from 1987-2001. As a faculty member at the Memorial Magnetic Resonance Education Institute, established by Dr. William Bradley, Dr. Amster was a teacher and regular lecturer for the MRI fellowship and UCI Radiology residency programs in neuroradiology and musculoskeletal imaging. Dr. Amster has numerous publications and presentations on MRI evaluation of neurological and orthopedic diseases, particularly spine diseases. One of his primary publications is entitled: “The Spine - MR of the Musculoskeletal System: A Teaching File.” (Raven Press)
Dr. Amster previously served as radiology medical director at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center, Fountain Valley, California, and as a member of the Medical Executive Committee, Education Committee, and Credentials Committee.
Dr. Amster is married to fellow LPMI radiologist, Dr. Kay Yan.
Kay Yan, M.D., Associate Medical Director, Director of Women’s Services
Kay Yan, M.D. is a partner and associate medical director for Liberty Pacific Medical Imaging Long Beach, specializing in body imaging and women’s services. Dr. Yan is co-founder, vice-president, secretary and treasurer of Vista Radiology Medical Associates, and a board certified radiologist, specializing in breast MRI, CT and ultrasound.
Dr. Yan is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University in bioengineering and completed a medical degree at George Washington University in 1985. Her clinical training includes one-year internships in internal medicine and general surgery at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. During her four-year residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of California Irvine, she served as chief resident and received the Mallinckrodt Award as outstanding resident.
After completing her residency, Dr. Yan was a clinical and research fellow at the Long Beach Memorial Magnetic Resonance Imaging Center and the Memorial Magnetic Resonance Educational Institute with William Bradley, M.D., DABR, FARC. She has lectured on the orthopedic applications of MRI, and authored numerous articles and presentations in orthopedic and neurological topics in MRI.

She was radiology medical director at Newport Diagnostic Center, director of MRI/CT at Del Amo Diagnostic Center, radiology consultant for MRI development at Little Company of Mary Hospital and radiology consultant at the Long Beach Memorial Breast Center and the Breast Cancer Radiation Treatment Planning Committee.
Dr. Yan is married to fellow LPMI radiologist Dr. Jay Amster.
